Mechanical/Mechanism Design Engineer –
Precision Micro-Mechanisms & Beam Pointing Systems
(f/m/d)

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer who independently owns the mechanical and mechatronic design for laser communication terminals on UAV and drone platforms – from concept and detailed design to prototyping, qualification and production. The role combines DJI-style consumer product thinking—small, integrated, cost-efficient and manufacturable—with a clear path to a ruggedized variant designed to relevant aerospace, environmental and industry standards.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop compact multi-axis pointing mechanisms using miniature motors, bearings/bushings, position sensors/encoders, springs/flexures, cable wraps or slip rings, and highly integrated mechanical interfaces
  • Develop low-SWaP-C architectures with high repeatability, stiffness and dynamic performance, supported by tolerance, thermal and structural analysis and support pointing/jitter optimization
  • Collaborate closely with controls, electronics and optics teams to balance mechanical precision, sensing, calibration, software compensation and cost
  • Select commercial off-the-shelf components and scalable manufacturing processes wherever appropriate, while evaluating modern and alternative manufacturing technologies to improve performance, cost, manufacturability and production scalability
  • Drive design-to-cost, DFM/DFA, low part count, easy assembly, supplier selection, second sourcing and BOM-cost reduction for series production
  • Create a common platform with a cost-efficient commercial baseline and a ruggedized option, upgrading only where required to meet relevant environmental, vibration, shock, thermal, ingress-protection and aerospace standards
  • Build and validate prototypes through functional, lifetime, vibration, shock, thermal and environmental testing, and support the transition to production

 What You Bring

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Precision Engineering, Product Design or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience developing compact precision mechanisms or mechatronic products, ideally for drones, consumer electronics, camera or gimbal systems, robotics, or industrial applications
  • Hands-on experience designing and integrating compact electromechanical systems, including miniature actuators, pointing or gimbal mechanisms, bearings
or bushings, springs or flexures, position sensing, and cable management
  • A strong product-engineering mindset with the ability to balance performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost – experience in high-volume or cost-sensitive product development and supplier collaboration highly desirable
  • Proficiency with CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor – experience in designing and qualifying products to relevant environmental, aerospace or industry standards is an advantage
  • Excellent written and spoken English

Why Join Us?

  • Shape next-gen laser communication technology with real-world impact
  • Work in a deep-tech startup backed by top-tier research and strategic partners
  • Join an inspiring, international, mission-driven, agile team
  • Flat hierarchies, real ownership, and a high degree of autonomy
  • A mix of lab, field, and flight testing—no two days are the same
  • Direct influence on products, technology, and company growth
  • Flexible working hours and home office by arrangement
  • Permanent employment contract

You are comfortable working with incomplete requirements, identifying open issues and developing creative, technically robust solutions through analysis, experimentation and rapid iteration. With a proactive, hands-on approach and sound engineering judgement, you independently drive design tasks and turn ideas into robust, manufacturable products.
